and the changes keep on coming

a while back I posted some photos of kids that I had photographed years ago, and added an updated photo of those same “kids” as adults.

A fascinating comparison – to see the early and the current.

I had a visitor this week. A young man who once, at the age of 13,  was a student of mine.  I remember with absolute clarity his infectious and brilliant smile – which began and sparkled in his eyes. I used to joke that he was incapable of “not smiling”   . . . which simply used to make him smile.

We used to talk of books, travel, and what the future might hold.  As goes the course of time and the lives of youth, he moved on and life continued. I saw him less and less.

Years have passed. This week he returned home for a fifteen day R&R from Iraq.

The voice is similar, the eyes are the same, and on occasion, the smile appears. Somehow, and I guess not surprisingly, it seems less immediate and a bit more guarded. –   clearly  he is no longer a little boy.

An amazing young man. A hero.
